Boomer Esiason Blasts NFL Refs for Blowing Chiefs/Chargers Game
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
Former NFL quarterback and now color commentator, Boomer Esiason, blasts the referees of this weekends Chiefs vs Chargers game. He thinks there were two blown calls that should have gone the Chiefs way and he believes would have resulted in a Chiefs victory, thus allowing the Steelers not the Chargers to make the playoffs.
Tony Parker in Trouble for Nazi Salute Pic
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
Spurs guard Tony Parker is in a little bit of hot water for a Nazi salute picture that made it's way on to Al Gore's internet via twitter. He is posing in the pic with a French comedian who is known for his anti-Semitic views.

— LanafollessKilla (@Lana93390) December 28, 2013
Parker of course has released a statement and claimed complete ignorance to the fact that the salute is a Nazi salute, via Ball Don't Lie:
"While this gesture has been part of French culture for many years, it was not until recently that I learned of the very negative concerns associated with it. When l was photographed making that gesture three years ago, I thought it was part of a comedy act and did not know that it could be in any way offensive or harmful. Since I have been made aware of the seriousness of this gesture, I will certainly never repeat the gesture and sincerely apologize for any misunderstanding or harm relating to my actions. Hopefully this incident will serve to educate others that we need to be more aware that things that may seem innocuous can actually have a history of hate and hurt."

Black Monday Is Here and Coaches Are Being Fired
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
Mike Shanahan, Leslie Frazier, Greg Schiano, Jim Schwartz are the coaches fired so far on what has been widely known as "Black Monday." They join Rob Chudzinski (fired Sunday) and Greg Kubiak (fired earlier this month) in the head coaching unemployment line.
There are others that could be joining them but Rex Ryan won't be one of them. The Jets owner announced that Rex would be returning next season after the Jets win over the Dolphins on Sunday.

That's right Mike Ditka fell asleep during Sunday NFL Countdown, welcome to the club Mike. It's Sunday morning and all we want is for the NFL games to kickoff so we turn on anything football.
But all of the talking and speculation puts us straight to sleep and we're well rested by the time kick off rolls around and we have to change the channel because bowling or poker or something comes on ESPN.

Playoff Predictions: Wild Card Round
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
With the NFL playoff picture set the schedule has been released. So naturally predictions follow. But first the schedule.
Saturday, January 4th
4:35 PM
Chiefs
Colts
8:10 PM
Saints
Eagles
Sunday, January 5th
1:05 PM
Chargers
Bengals
4:40 PM
49ers
Packers
Wild Card weekend should be just as exciting as week 17. Now for the predictions: Chiefs, Eagles, Bengals and 49ers all will advance with defense being the deciding factor in all of the games except the Saints/Eagles. The Saints have been a different team on the road and I think the Eagles can pull it out.

Record Setting Day for Manning and the Broncos
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
Peyton Manning and the Broncos continued their historic season with Manning grabbing the single season passing yards record and the Broncos taking the most points scored record. Manning adds the single season passing yards record to his single season touchdown record. Is there anyone in the AFC that can stop them? Especially considering they took the number one seed.

Playoff Picture Set in Wild Week 17
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
The Packers outlasted the Bears in a back and forth battle in Chicago 33-28 to take home the NFC North crown. The Chargers grabbed the last spot in the AFC beating the Kansas City backups in OT after some help with some other contenders dropping their games.
And finally on Sunday Night Football the Eagles take the NFC East after beating the Cowboys 24-22. Kyle Orton played well but proved it doesn't matter who is playing QB for the Cowboys with the game on the line they will turn the ball over.
So the playoff picture is set.

Troy Aikman is the Only One Who Thinks Kyle Orton Will Play Well
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
Troy Aikman is not only a fan of Kyle Orton but also expects him to play well on Sunday. Aikman is either getting behind the team he used to quarterback and trying to boost some confidence or those concussions he suffered as a player are affecting him more than we thought.
The Eagles are going to smash the Cowboys and it really has nothing to do with the quarterback position. Their defense is terrible. There I said it, I said what everyone else is thinking- except Aikman.

Tony Romo Won't Get a Chance to Blow It
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
The Dallas Cowboys final chance to make the playoffs is a win against divisional rival and current divisional leader the Philadelphia Eagles. Everyone held their breath waiting for Tony Romo to blow the Redskins game he did not but he did injure his back.
According to Adam Schefter the injury will require surgery and his season is over. So Romo won't be able to blow the week 17 game against the Eagles. The Cowboys will have to rely on their backup Kyle Orton.
Only one problem with all of this and that is that Jason Garrett is still claiming Romo could play. Either he's throwing a misdirection the Eagles way or he's not on the same page with the doctors.

The Broncos and Gronkless Patriots had no problem taking the AFC's number 1 and 2 seeds respectively.

It takes some time to heal the older you get and athletes rely so heavily on a healthy body. It will be interesting to see if this leads to any further problems with Kobe when he returns.

The inactive RGIII had a blast today watching the Redskins get beat again! He seems to really be benefiting from the time off. At least he'll have an injury free last few weeks and a full off-season.

Miami Blows Field Goal Attempt But Wins the Game
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
The Miami Dolphins blew this field goal attempt but hold off the Patriots to keep their playoff hopes alive and are currently in the 6th spot. The Dolphins figured out a way even after blowing this kick to hold it together and take down the Gronkless Patriots.
Jay Cutler Gets the Win and a Kiss from Brandon Marshall

Jay Cutler returns and after a shaky start turned it up to lead the Bears to a critical win over the Browns. After the game his favorite target Brandon Marshall couldn't control himself and gave Cutler a big smooch on the cheek.
Not sure if Cutler was ready for it but he took it in stride and completed the interview without further incident.

Mack Brown Resigns and Jameis Winston wins Heisman
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
After a week of meetings and denials it's now official Mack Brown will resign after Texas plays their bowl game. The question now is was there an effort to delay the announcement so that Nick Saban would lose interest in the job? It appears so.

Nick Saban Signs Extension
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
Nick Saban signs a multi-year extension with Alabama. Worth $7-7.5 million per year, this likely means he's not going after the Texas job. With Texas and Mack Brown continuing to go through their own saga, Saban looks to have bowed out of the equation.
Texas may have been hoping Saban was going to leave Alabama and that's why they started the talks with Mack Brown about his future. So does Texas keep him now?

Yankees Introduce Jacoby Ellsbury
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
The formal introduction of Jacoby Ellsbury as the Yankees new center fielder occurred today. While I was able to watch without vomiting, in part because of Mrs. Ellsbury a small part of me did in fact die. As a fan of the Yankees Ellsbury's signing is a hard pill to swallow.
I know there have been others- Babe Ruth, Wade Boggs, Roger Clemens and Johnny Damon to name a few. I didn't hate them as much as I hate Ellsbury. But I guess he'll fit in nicely with my hatred of Girardi.

Chargers Hand Broncos First Home Loss of the Season
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
The Chargers with their playoff hopes on the line, marched into Denver and handed the Broncos their first home loss of the season winning 27-20. No the cold weather wasn't o blame, sure it was cold. But the Chargers did it with running back Ryan Matthews and ball control. They kept Peyton Manning off of the field. Wes Welker missing the game didn't help but what really did them in was Manning and the offense standing on the sidelines.

Twerking in the Stands Hits the College Ranks

Twerking for money in the stands at a professional sporting event is nothing new. At a college game, well now that's a different twist isn't it. This twerker got down at a West Virginia basketball game the other day and caused a pretty big scene in the nose bleeds. So much so she was almost thrown out.
Thanks the good lord everyone carries phones and the event has quickly spread on Al Gore's internets.

And here is me encouraging this further. Please send me video of yourself or others twerking at sporting events! Lets help it spread, like the wave or something- !

Mariners Announce Cano, Yankees Fans Unhappy and Cano Claims it Wasn't About the Money
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
The Mariners announced their new second basemen Robinson Cano and shared a picture of the new bearded Mariner.
It turns out Cano felt disrespected by the Yankees. Yeah he was disrespected with a 7 year $175 million dollar contract offer. An offer that would have grossly overpaid him and is actually annually larger than the one he signed. But it lacked his 10 year request so that apparently equals disrespect.
Robinson will wear #22 #HelloCano pic.twitter.com/JJ9qKhf3Ct
— Seattle Mariners (@Mariners) December 12, 2013
Notice the lack of a smile on his face, get used to that Robinson. Also of note is the number change, no way would Seattle let him wear Ken Griffey Jr.'s 24.
I’m looking forward to the future and joining the @Mariners in Seattle! Thank you New York & my amazing fans for the support thru the years.
— Robinson Cano (@RobinsonCano) December 12, 2013
On the day of the official announcement Cano took to twitter to thank the Yankees fans who supported him, but not all are happy with him after his decision to leave. One tweeted:
@RobinsonCano no one likes you ! You aren’t welcome in this city go kill yourself — Anthony Scotti (@anthony_scotti) December 12, 2013As you can clearly see, no love lost. There is also a glaring omission from Cano's tweet. He thanks NY and the fans but not the Yankees. I soon found out why when I caught the snippet of his interview with Pedro Gomez that I posted below.
It may be true that it is 3 years longer but it is also true that the contract is $65 million dollars larger. He can tell himself whatever he'd like, the fact remains he is greedy and he signed for more money. He claims you can't get a deal at 37 or 38 and Bartolo Colon just signed a two year $20 million dollar deal at 41. If you produce you can get a contract!

Brian Urlacher Says McCown Should Start
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
Former Bears' linebacker Brian Urlacher is causing a little buzz after saying Josh McCown should start over a healthy Jay Cutler. The Bears have already stated that Jay Cutler will start when healthy even though McCown has played well.
I agree with Urlacher you can't sit McCown with how hot he's been playing. Cutler is injury prone, inconsistent and a little overrated. He's a good quarterback but I think is future with the Bears might be in doubt depending on how well he plays when he returns and ow the Bears finish the season.
Cutler will probably have to deal with a very short leash and if he struggles don'r be surprised if they call on the hot hand of Josh McCown.

Welker's second concussion occurred on what seemed to be a routine play. Yes his head was hit but not nearly as violently as we've seen other shots that result in concussions. Given that it could be an issue with Welker going forward and he could miss another week as a precaution.
Corey Hart Signs with Mariners
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
The Mariners are clearly still active in the free agent market signing former Brewer Corey Hart. Hart will reportedly protect Robinson Cano in the Mariners lineup. I wouldn't classify the signing as protection for Cano.
Hart signs a 1 year $5 million dollar deal. He missed all of the 2013 season with a right knee injury and at 31, there is no way to know if he will return to his old form. So it's a little hopeful on the Mariners part and a little premature on the media's part to say he will protect Cano. At this point we just don't know.

RGIII Benched For Kirk Cousins
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
Mike Shanahan benches RGIII for the rest of the season. Is it a move by Shanahan to get fired? Is it to protect RGIII? Or some sort of guilt because he played RGIII too long last year or too early this season?
No one will really know, what we do know is Kirk Cousins will be starting the next three weeks. What is likely is there will be a coaching change in Washington next season.

The Real Reason Cano Left The Yankees
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
The real reason Robinson Cano left the Yankees was he didn't want to play for Joe Girardi. Well according to the New York Post anyway. They claim to have received the information from three of Cano's unnamed friends.
According to three people who know Cano, he didn’t enjoy playing for manager Joe Girardi and that may have factored into the decision, though the Mariners giving him $60 million more than the Yankees offered ($175 million) likely had more to do with him leaving.
“Robbie didn’t like batting second, he wanted to bat in the middle of the order,’’ one person said. “The Yankees wanted him second because that was best for the team. He wanted to hit in the middle of the order to drive in runs [to increase his value].’’One of the friends goes on to say specifically he didn't want to play for the current Yankees manager.
“He told me he didn’t want to play for [Girardi],’’ a friend of Cano’s said.I'm sure Cano is happy with his decision to leave, for now anyway. Let's circle back with him after a couple of losing seasons. To think that just because the Mariners signed Cano and even a couple more players this off season and suddenly they will be contenders is absurd. They have many holes to fill.

Roy Halladay Signs With The Blue Jays

Roy Halladay signed with the Blue Jays. But it's not what you think! The two time Cy Young Award winner signed a one day contract to retire as a Blue Jay.
The right hander spent the first twelve of his sixteen years in the major leagues as a member of the Blue Jays and the last four with the Phillies. Halladay calls it quits after two difficult, injury plagued seasons. The 36 year old is a 200 game winner and leaves the game almost 100 games over .500 with a record of 203-105 with an ERA of 3.38 in 416 career games.
The Blue jays made the announcement at the winter meetings in Orlando.

TJ Ward Defends Hit on Gronk and the Week of the Leg Injury
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
TJ Ward defends his hit on Rob Gronkowski that tore the tight end's ACL and MCL and says he "prays for him."
Ward put the hit heard round the NFL when he injured the Patriots playoff hope with a hit below the knees. While the Patriots were 5-1 and did come back this Sunday without their big tight end, they've really started to click with him in there.
Gronk's might have been the one heard round the NFL but this week was the week of the knee and foot injury with several players going down.
Adrian Peterson left Sunday's game against the Ravens with up until this point is being called a sprained foot. Jonathan Stewart left the Panthers and Saints game with a torn MCL and Arizona Cardinals defensive back, Tyrann Mathieu went down with a torn ACL.

Mike Shanahan Might Be The Next Coach Fired
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
Mike Shanahan addressed the rumors that have been swirling that he wanted out last year because of Dan Snyder and his relationship with RGIII. Shanahan didn't deny the rumors and refused to discuss it. The Redskins laid a giant turd getting blown out by the Chiefs and speculation is that he could be fired very soon.
This press conference probably didn't help save his job, although I doubt he wants to remain.

Matt Prater set the NFL record for longest field goal with a 64 yarder against the Titans. The cold weather didn't bother him! It's fitting he would set the record on a day in the NFL that saw a couple other records set. Most TD's in a day of NFL action (yeah the really keep track of that) and the fastest QB to 50,000 yards. And of course lots of snow games to add to the fun.

Rob Gronkowski Carted Off the Field After a Big Hit

Rob Gronkowski's season could be over just weeks after it began. The often injured Patriot tight end suffered a vicious hit by Cleveland's TJ Ward. If it's as bad as it looks then he's probably done for the season.
Gronk joins fellow star Adrian Peterson who also suffered a lower body injury and had to be carted off, on this very snowy day in the NFL.
Check out the hit below.

But if your a fan in the stadiums your experience is a little different. It doesn't look like much fun for them.

Ohio State Loses Big Ten Championship Game

Ohio State lost to Michigan State 32-24 in the Big 10 championship game. Losing their perfect record and probably a shot at a title.
With Florida State and Auburn taking care of their respective championship games and the loss by Ohio State in the Big 10 championship game, it looks as if the title game will come down to Florida State and Auburn.
It makes the most sense and Auburn fans clearly think so. They celebrated the Ohio State loss into the night.

Carlos Beltran Signs with the Yankees

On the a day when both Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson left town the Yankees signed Carlos Beltran. After signing Jacoby Ellsbury the Yankees are now loaded with outfielders.
You gotta think either Beltran will be DHing the majority of time or Brett Gardner is on the way out. Given Beltran's age he'll likely be DH. Beltran signed for 3 years and $45 million dollars.

Mike Napoli and his beard announced via his twitter account that he's staying in Boston. It is being reported that the first basemen will ink a two year $32 million dollar contract to stay put in Boston.
It is also widely believed he had better offers on the table and chose to remain with the Red Sox. Napoli of course was a key part of the Red Sox World Series run this past season and obviously want to try it again.

The signing is actually refreshing considering what has happened this week with Ellsbury, Saltalamacchia and Cano ditching clubs they spent several years with in favor of money.
