Blake Griffin Told His Donald Sterling White Party Story On Conan

Blake Griffin recently wrote an article for The Player's Tribune detailing a bizarre encounter at one of Donald Sterling's "white" parties.

He spoke about the details of the article with Conan and if you didn't read the article it's worth listening to Griffin explain the very strange things that happen at a Sterling white party.

Clippers Fans This Guy is Your Team's New Owner

Steve Ballmer is excited about being the new owner of the Clippers.  As he put on full display at the press conference that made the official announcement.

For the Clippers fans and players it means no more of Donald Sterling and his racist rule.

Clippers Officially Have a New Owner, Shelly Sterling Becomes Official Number 1 Fan

The sale of the Clippers to Steve Ballmer is now official, with the deal finalized yesterday.  But that doesn't mean there won't be a Sterling at Clippers games.

Sure Donald Sterling is no longer going to have anything else to do with the team, but that's not the case for Shelly Sterling.

Steve Ballmer Buys the Clippers for $2 Billion

Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer reaches an agreement with Shelley Sterling to purchase the Los Angeles Clippers.

Former Microsoft CEO Offers 1.8 Billion for Clippers

According to Forbes, former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, has made a 1.8 Billion dollar bid to purchase the Los Angeles Clippers.
Ballmer, who retired as Microsoft’s CEO four months ago has a net worth of $20 billion. Another source, with intimate knowledge of the bids that Rochelle Sterling has thus far received for the basketball team, said offers have come in between $1 billion and $2 billion and that the Ballmer package is strong.
It is still early in the bidding process for the Clippers and it is quite possible that the price could go higher, especially if interested parties join forces to buy the team. Still, I must tip my hat to Bill Simmons, who predicted at the end of April that the basketball team would fetch $1.75 billion. Donald Sterling bought the Clippers in June, 1981 for $12.5 million. NBA owners are voting June 3 to force he and his wife Rochelle to sell the team due to racist comments made by him in private that were taped and subsequently made public.
A 1.8 Billion dollar bid categorized as a strong bid might be one of the most obvious statements that I've ever read.

Thoughts on Mark Cuban from 111 Archer Avenue

If you follow the NBA, two headlines have been dominating, apart from the actual Playoffs.  One is the Donald Sterling case, which you can read about here, and the other is the recent interview Mark Cuban did with Inc.  Cuban is owner of the Dallas Mavericks & the co-host of Shark Tank, and he has some interesting thoughts on the topics of Sterling and racism.  You can check out the interview here, but let me sum up.  Basically, Cuban claims that we all have prejudices, that we all judge others by their appearance, and that our hidden fears often drive our visible actions.  He says he lives in a glass house and wouldn't be the first person to throw bricks at someone else who may have said the wrong thing.  He goes on to mention his fears of young black men in hoodies and young white men with tattooed faces, claiming that we all have similar prejudices, that we need to understand that fact instead of immediately hating other for their unpopular opinions.

First off, what he said isn't really that incredible.  That concept in being taught in sensitivity trainings all over the country, the idea that we all have certain stereotypes & judgements and that it's better to acknowledge those than it is to hide them.  I don't think many people would argue against the validity of what he said; we do all have prejudices, even if they are small or don't affect how we treat others.  Problems arise when individuals let these thoughts govern how they view others, how they interact with others, turning ingrained social concepts into hurtful & racist actions.  So really, you can read Cuban's opinion in text books in high schools and colleges everywhere; it's not that groundbreaking.

The trouble is, he used specific examples of the things that "scare" him, and one of them was too reminiscent of Trayvon Martin.  That's still a sensitive subject for a lot of people, and it's not great business to tell the world that you get nervous when you see people that resemble an innocent boy who got shot by a psychotic vigilante.  Add that to the recent Sterling case, and you're treading on dangerous ground.  It's hard to disagree with exactly what Cuban said, but it's easier when you understand that he's refusing to point a finger at Sterling because he doesn't want four pointing right back at him.  Sterling doesn't deserve sympathetic understanding, nor does he deserve a fellow owner coming into his corner and saying, "Hey, we're all racist in some way, give the guy a break!" We may all have minor prejudices, but only a few of us tell our girlfriends not to talk to black people, or shoot kids because we assume they're criminals, or cross the street when we come across a person who has a lot of tattoos.  There are unconscious stereotypes and then there are conscious choices; I guess only Mark Cuban knows which of the two his inner thoughts are.

JT Takes On Donald Sterling

Justin Timberlake was doing his thang at the Billboard Awards and in pure Justin fashion was having a great time.  He then out of nowhere took a shot at Donald Sterling our old white guy racist of the week.

But what about the other racists?  You're thanking them aren't you or is Sterling the only one?  I'm confused now I thought it was a sweet ass diss yo, but now I'm not so sure.

Donald Sterling is Not Going Down Without a Fight

Donald Sterling has hired an attorney and is refusing to pay his $2.5 million dollar fine.  He's also threatening to sue the NBA.  Sterling hired antitrust attorney Maxwell Blecher who has sent a letter to the NBA claiming Sterling has done nothing wrong and he won't pay the fine, via SI:
The letter, sources tell SI.com, claims that Sterling has done nothing wrong and that "no punishment is warranted" for Sterling. Blecher also tells Buchanan that Sterling will not pay the $2.5 million fine, which is already past due. Blecher ends the letter by saying this controversy "will be adjudicated."
Blecher's letter makes clear what many have anticipated: Donald Sterling will not go down without a fight and that he is taking active steps toward litigation. A letter of this type is considered a precursor to the filing of a lawsuit. Blecher's letter offers no ambiguity about Sterling's intentions.
"We reject your demand for payment," the letter tells Buchanan, who on May 14 informed Sterling by letter that he must pay the $2.5 million fine.
Everyone who knew Donald Sterling said there would be a fight and he would not step down quietly and that is exactly what is happening.  This should get very interesting when it drags on and a legal battle ensues.  What will the players do?  What will Doc Rivers do?

Donald Sterling's Supposed Apology Takes Aim at Magic Johnson

ABC US News | ABC Entertainment News

Donald Sterling did an interview with Anderson Cooper and was supposed to be apologizing for the comments recorded and released by his girlfriend, V. Stiviano.  But instead Sterling seemed to glaze over and briefly apologize, he also took the opportunity to criticize NBA legend and former friend Magic Johnson.

Sterling criticized Johnson's work for minorities and his role as a role model to kids.  He brought up his HIV and how many women he slept with.  Sterling clearly to the opportunity to slam Johnson.

Donald Sterling is Not a Racist, According to Donald Sterling

Donald Sterling is now trying to prove he's not a racist.  Doing that whole "I'm not a racist because I know black people."  Sterling was reportedly attempting to get someone to agree that he wasn't a racist and finally got someone to pick up the phone.  But the guy on the other end wasn't ready to say Sterling wasn't a racist, via Larry Brown Sports:

V. Stiviano Did an Interview with Barbara Walters

V. Stiviano, Donald Sterling's girlfriend who secretly recorded his racist comment, did an interview with Barbara Walters for 20/20.  This interview is completely insane.  You get to see inside V. Stiviano's mind and she is as bat shit crazy as they come.  Stiviano is now defending Sterling and saying that he's not a racist.

Video Starts at the 2:15 minute mark:

Donald Sterling Has Prostate Cancer

So the lifetime ban of Donald Sterling could prove not to be that long.  The 80 year old has been battling prostate cancer and according to a source he was supposed to die two years ago, NY Post:
“They thought he would die two years ago,” one source said of Sterling, who on Tuesday was banned for life from the NBA for his now-infamous recorded racist rant
“People have been predicting his imminent demise. I’m sure he has the best . . . drugs money can buy,” said the source, who works closely with pro sports teams. “He can do anything to keep himself alive.”
Incredible, people did joke a lifetime ban would be a short one, probably because he's 80 but he also has cancer.  Sterling has been reportedly calling around trying to get someone to tell him he's not a racist, but people are refusing to take his calls for fear that they might be recorded.
“He’s calling everyone, saying: ‘Tell me I’m not a racist,’ ” a source said, noting that the friends are refusing, for fear that Sterling was recording them.
So it appears as if there will be a sad little ending for a sad little man.

The Donald Sterling Case from 111 Archer Avenue

If you follow the world of sports, watch ESPN, or listen to sports radio, you've heard about Donald Sterling.  For the full story check out this article, but here's a little summary just in case you haven't heard.  Apparently Sterling, the owner of the L.A. Clippers NBA team, was recorded telling his girlfriend not to bring any black people around.  This isn't the first time Sterling has been linked to racist and/or sexist remarks, but this is the first time it was caught on tape.  When the recording was leaked, NBA players and fans called for immediate action from Commissioner Adam Silver, which he quickly delivered.  Silver banned Sterling for life from the sport, prohibiting him from attending any Clippers games, practices, or events.  He also fined him $2.5 million which will be donated to local charities that specialize in cultural & ethnic diversity.  And last but not least, the board of NBA owners will be asked to vote that Sterling be forced to sell his team, an action that is believed to be supported by all other owners and should pass easily.  So, in essence, Sterling has been exiled from the sport, fined a large amount of money, and forced to abandon his franchise.  Swift and harsh penalties to be sure, representing the maximum punishments that the league can lawfully dole out.

Now, the controversy begins.  The two extreme sides of the argument over this issue are as follows; one side believes that Sterling should have been evicted long ago, that the NBA has done nothing until their own reputation & money took a hit, that this was too long in coming.  The other side, led by Fox News, claims that Sterling was only exercising his right to free speech, that taking away his freedom in this manner is a slippery slope towards other injustices.  And as usual, the majority believe something in the middle, that this man crossed the line, that his punishment is fair, and that the Commissioner got it right.

Whatever side you lean towards, or whether you are in the middle, one this is certain; this is about money.  Remember the Duck Dynasty fiasco?  Some bearded man says gay people are going to hell, gets fired, and everyone flips out.  That was seen as a social issue, but it never was.  It was a business move, firing an unpopular figure so that the company that employed him wouldn't lose sponsorship revenue, ad money, ratings points.  Corporations have to follow the passions of the populace, that's the way they make a profit.  So if our country is currently pro equal rights, you can't publicly express your views to the contrary without repercussions.  Basically, you can't make your employer look like they support your unpopular beliefs; they don't want that kind of negative publicity, they'd rather just fire you.

And that's what happened here.  As soon as Sterling's comments became public, his attitude reflected badly on the NBA.  Sponsors bailed within days, fans talked about not coming to Clippers playoff games, and there were quickly rumors that the players themselves wouldn't play for a man who held those opinions, that a strike was a very real possibility.  So what does the Commish do?  Levy the heaviest fine he can, ban the man from the league, vow to do all he can to make Sterling sell his team.  That was Silver's only option here.  The NBA's money was in danger, there reputation was taking a hit, and they couldn't allow someone to remain in there club who held beliefs that insulted a huge number of their players & fans.

We can call this a social issue if you like, because it does reflect the direction that our country is moving in, a path toward complete respect for diversity & the annihilation of racism.  But while those are great things, we shouldn't view Adam Silver and the NBA as magnanimous heroes that stood up to bigotry and slammed it down.  What they did was in their best interest first, a humanitarian issue second.  What would they have done had the majority of sponsors supported Sterling's comments and vowed to leave if he was punished?  We'll never know because that's not where our nation is right now and that's not what happened.  But you can be sure that rich men will always protect their money.  If they can do that while looking like saints, they gladly will.

Oprah Joins Growing List of the Wealthy Interested in Buying Clippers

Oprah Winfrey is reportedly throwing her hat into those interested in buying the Clippers.  She joins a growing list that includes Magic Johnson, Floyd Mayweather, Dr. Dre, Puff Daddy and Matt Damon to name a few.

Oprah buying the team as a woman of color and taking it away from an old white racist would be great.  But aren't we forgetting someone in this whole thing?  This isn't the first time Donald Sterling has been accused of racism.  The tenants who live in his buildings have complained for years.  The sale of the team needs to happen, but can we also get a bunch of rich athletes and celebrities together to help those living in his buildings get new places to live?

News of a Dramatic Boycott Plan by the Golden State Warriors

News that there was at least one team prepared to take a drastic stand if the NBA didn't come down as hard as it could was released.  The Golden State Warriors were planning to walk out on game 5 in dramatic fashion had appropriate action not been taken by the NBA, via Mercury News:
The Warriors were going to go through pre-game warm-ups and take part in the national anthem and starting line-up introductions. They were going to take the floor for the jump ball, dapping up the Clippers players as is customary before games.
Then once the ball was in the air, they were just going to walk off. All 15 of them.
The rumored walk out was confirmed by Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry who had this to say about the plans to walk out.
“It would have been our only chance to make a statement in front of the biggest audience that we weren’t going to accept anything but the maximum punishment,” Curry said. “We would deal with the consequences later but we were not going to play.”
I'm glad it didn't have to come to that and that the NBA took the appropriate steps to punish Donald Sterling, but I'm also glad that they planned to walk out if the maximum penalty wasn't handed down.

What is up with the Question by FOX News at the NBA Press Conference Today?

Leave it up to FOX News.  They had a "reporter" from "The Kelly File" ask a question about the Donald Sterling banning at the NBA press conference on his comments.  The question is about as stupid as you'd expect.

She asked, "Should someone lose their team for remarks shared in private?  Is this a slippery slope?"

The "slippery slope" is clearly buzz words that the morons attempted to work into the question without success as Adam Silver was having none of that type of questioning.

Donald Sterling Doesn't Like White People Either

White basketball players anyway.  Donald Sterling made it pretty clear with his comments, during the taped conversation with his girlfriend, V. Stiviano, that he has deeply rooted racist beliefs and what appeared to be a general disdain for women.

But there is new information coming out that Sterling had a problem paying white basketball players, feeding even more into this plantation mentality.

The Clippers owner reportedly was hesitant to sign off on the trade that brought JJ Redick to the Clippers, because he didn't want to pay a white basketball player the type of money that Redick makes, via Larry Brown Sports:
Mostly, he’s never loved paying white players. In that way, he has an absolute plantation prism with which he sees players: He always preferred long, strong, physical players. To him, that’s a basketball player: Big, black and strong
When Sterling became reluctant to honor Rivers’ sign-and-trade agreement for J.J. Redick, there was a belief race played a factor. As one league source said, “He thought it was too much to pay for a white player.”
Yes, Sterling didn’t want to so easily part with Eric Bledsoe, despite Rivers telling him they could never afford to pay Bledsoe in restricted free agency next summer. That was part of it, yes, but those who knew Sterling – who had history with him – believed largely that his disdain for paying $7 million per year for a white player caused him pause.
It too insane not to be true, especially when you hear his backwards thinking on tape.  The man is clearly too toxic for the NBA and his removal is the right move.

BREAKING NEWS: Donald Sterling Banned For Life from Clippers and NBA

Adam Silver announced at a press conference that Donald Sterling has been banned from the Clippers organization for life.  Sterling has been fined $2.5 million dollars and he will be forced into selling the team.

Silver stated he's talked with other owners and that they're on board with the forced sale.  Silver added that Sterling did say the voice on the tape was his.
