25 year old Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Yordano Ventura was killed in a car accident in the Dominican Republic on Sunday.
It is with a heavy and broken heart that we confirm the passing of Yordano Ventura. The club will release a statement soon. #RIPAce— Mike Swanson (@Swanee54) January 22, 2017
Via ESPN: A colonel in the Dominican Republic police told ESPN's Enrique Rojas that the crash occurred in the town of Juan Adrian.
"Our prayers right now are with Yordano's family as we mourn this young man's passing," said Royals general manager Dayton Moore via statement. "He was so young and so talented, full of youthful exuberance and always brought a smile to everyone he interacted with. We will get through this as an organization, but right now is a time to mourn and celebrate the life of Yordano."
Authorities have shared pictures from the crash scene on social media and reports are that he was under the influence at the time of the accident. See pics from the scene here (heads up Ventura's body can be seen in one of the pics).
Same day, separate sole death accidents of #MLB players @YordanoVentura & Andy Marte, similar circumstance; both said to be under influence.— Cristian Moreno|ESPN (@CristianMorenoD) January 22, 2017
We will truly miss him acting like an asshole almost every time he took the mound.
