The referees missed a facemask penalty when A.J. McCarron's facemask was grabbed. Then right before the next play there is a whistle and a flag for a facemask.
What? It appears as if someone notified the referee of the penalty after they saw the replay. But a facemask is a non reviewable call, isn't it? I guess the NFL just makes up the rules as they go, Pro Football Talk:
“For those asking about the facemask, the input had to come from somewhere else. Had to be replay and it is not reviewable,” former NFL head of officiating Mike Pereira wrote on Twitter. “Nobody will convince me otherwise. I don’t like it. The rules don’t allow that. I know it is about getting it right but….”Absolutely agree with Pereira here. You got the call right, that is great, but you didn't follow the proper procedure.
If every missed penalty is going to start being sent in from a replay official why even have the officials on the field? Or rules in place that outline what is reviewable?
